Hi,
I have a new tank about 4 weeks old now. I have 6 Dino’s and have just introduced 2 salmontails. One salmontail is dark grey and looks healthy, but the other has changed colour and now looks light grey. Any ideas on how I can try to work out what’s going on? Is it normal for salmontails to go light coloured? Thanks. Tweetyfelix.

I answered your question here: http://aqua-fish.net/show.php?what=fish&cur_lang=2&id=217. Anyway, I hope I’m right and your fish aren’t sick .

Hi Tweetyfelix, have you tried to use any prevention medicament? You know, something what makes water "fish-friendly".
And yeah, your tank is quite new. So it’s chemistry isn’t stable yet I think. Let me know how things go.

Hi,
Tank details are as follows:
* established tank 29/1/07
current reading of water -
* temp currently 29 (celcius) - live in townsville - it’s hot at moment. Tank usually around 27
* ph 7.4
* ammonia 0.0
* nitrite 0.0-0.25 (going down steadily had spiked to 2.0 on 19/2)
* nitrate 5.0 (has been constant since 21/2)
biological filter system (ehiem) also have air filteration
have used new tank setup liquid, chlorine remover, geo liquid, and have just started to add salt.
Salmontail is still silver colour but does not appear sick or off food at moment. My main concern was that the other one did not change colour and I was just not sure what was going on. It possibly is still the cycling process, but as I hope to add tiger oscars, I just want to make sure everything is ok first.
Thanks again for your help, Tweetyfelix.

Hi Tweetyfelix ,
Everything looks fine. Maybe you should wait for adding tiger oscars about a week. If everything goes fine with salmontails, add them. Sometimes fish change colours because of their acclimatization; Some adapt better than others, which is probably reason why nearly all of your salmontails changed their colouration and only one didn’t do so.
But be careful. I added one Panda cory to my smaller tank about 3 months ago. Unfortunately, this small fish diedSad even though there have been 5 another Pandas already. They live until now and look very happy in the tank. It’s impossible to see what’s inside each fish. Some specimens don’t adapt to new aquarium easily, but another ones can get familiar to new tank in a moment.
Good luck and let me know how it goes .
