I have a 25L tank, currently with a rather old betta in it (2 and a half years ish) I am thinking about raising guppies in it (after he has passed on) and using them to feed an oscar fish when I get him.. is this wrong? i mean I know its how feeder fish are made, and I would be keeping small numbers in a clean, well cycled tank, with plenty of hiding places, surely this is better than buying fish who could have lived terribly? I will probably only give him the as a treat once a week or so, but maybe I should stick with the pellets and other foods? my boyfriend seems to think its terrible, but after all isnt that what happens en mass in fish farms and horrible commercial places? its just a more gentle, caring approach in my opinion. What do you think?

The plus side to it is that you know where they've been, and if you've had them a while you know they are not gonna make the oscar sick. But if you ask me, they're way too much trouble if you're just gonna feed em to someone. I mean, I suppose you can get a bunch of females and a single male, but if you do, by the wild guppies, since they have a better chance of being fertile than fancy guppies do.

well i feed my angels baby guppies maybe two or three times a week and i brought the guppies for that reason so i think there is no problem with it but every one is diffrent so its up to u .

I used to raise feeder fish for my oscars, as posted above at least you know you are not introducing any diseases into the tank raising your own.

thank you fopr all the help! Im going to see how long the old dear lasts, might have some guppies in there anyway, because they look nice and fit well in that kind of tank, going to feed the oscar pellets and see how he/she/? takes them (when I get it next weekish (soooo excited!)).

We had once guppies, but every small guppy was eaten by his own parents, so even guppies used their small as feeder fish. Yes, rising fish just to be eaten sounds horrible, but this is how it goes even in nature.

Had an oscar gave him feeder goldfish he ate all but 1 made it a "pet" or tankmate got to the point all he would eat was pellet food I raised him from 50cent size . feed him mosquito larva at that size

I have a small group of endlers guppies. I think I will expand upon these and keep the population stable by allowing the oscar a treat.
