When you get new fish, acclimate them properly. place the bag with the fish in it into the tank, so that the water temperatures can balance out slowly. Also, you should place a small amount of the aquariums water in with the fish in the bag, so that they can acclimate to the new water. Some people choose to use a small rubber drip line to do this, and it works very well. Another VERY important step in preventing fish diseases is to add salt to your tank. Even freshwater tanks can use salt. Now it is very important that you use salt that is made for fresh or salt water tanks.
