We have been having a real prob with our fish gsping for air.. When we asked the pet store they said to lower our water that the filter wasnt letting enough oxygen into the tank.. we did and it helped.. any other suggestions would be great!! Our fish tank is 30 gallons with: (2)convicts - (2) redi fin sharks - (1) red devil - (2) pink and one green fish that we dont know what they are but seem to make it through anything! (2)gourmis - (1) texas cichlid.. a sucker fish and algae eater!! pates 2008-12-13 Answer no. 1 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=hello____#2 hey........ i think if oxygen is the prob then first of all u should reduce the no of fishes..........if u dont wanna spend anemore.......and if u want to maintain the same no of fishes then u shud add one more oxgen pump......avilaible at any fish store......and use a wodden top cover to prevent fishes jumping out of the aquarium....................and if the water is remaining dirty u cud add one more filter as well.......ok..... surya_kant13 2008-12-13 Answer no. 2 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=hello____#3 and plzzzz dont lower the water level ............more water level means more amount of oxygen....... surya_kant13 2008-12-13 Answer no. 3 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=hello____#4 god reply there, the texas alone needs a bigger tank than that. How long has your tank been running and what are the parameters? The only way to introduce oxygen into the water is by surface agitation, aim your filter so that the outflow is level with the water surface. mickey 2008-12-15 Answer no. 4 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=hello____#5 I think the reason they told you to lower the water level is that with a hang-off-the-back type filter, a lower water level means a bigger splash and greater surface disturbance. That results in a greater exchange of gases, as I understand it. (Anyone care to correct me? Feel free.) There are other/better ways to achieve this. I just set up a 30 gallon and put a Fluval 4 in it. It came with an "adjustable" air injection valve. Basically, if you set it up correctly, it can suck some air in and send it out with the water that it is putting out. Of course, to get this to work you have to have the top of the unit close to the surface so the air injection probably does little considering the amount of surface disturbance this thing creates. You could also add an air pump and stone instead of lowering your water level. creacom 2008-12-16
