I just joined this site today so if you're curious about my experience just read my post. You have to understand first off that saltwater setup is far more expencive, not to mention the cost of the fish afterwards. Not to say freshwater is cheap, not for me anyway. I have a few fish that cost me $200 or more each. But for a beginner, small and fresh is the way to go. You can do livebearers if you want, but it isn't necessary. My first tank consisted of angelfish, a redtail shark (NOT A REDTAIL CATFISH - BIG DIFFERENCE!), a few gourami's, some cory cats, and a fiddler crab (escape artist). You have to take your tank size into consideration for whatever you buy. The bigger the fish, the fewer you can keep. I have a 540 gallon with only a handful of fish in it, all of which are large killers. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask. pianomanjcg 2009-01-17
