Hardy little cuties. Well, I've had them for about 2-3 weeks now, and I keep them in a large fish bowl with an airstone and am about to move them to a one gallon. they're about 3-5 cent. I noticed that one of the babies tail, instead of having the deep 'V' fin like the others, has a kind of opposite, pointed fin. its swimming fine. I was wondering if it's possible that it's a type of male, since the female's fins all look the same. also, it has blue eyes, where the others are normal colored. could it be a hybrid of some kind? Amber 2009-02-15 Answer no. 1 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=guppy-babies#2 sounds like a hybrid which seems to be quite common with guppies, when it gets bigger it would be interesting to see a pic mickey 2009-02-15 Answer no. 2 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=guppy-babies#3 *update* I have my first 'home made' guppy babies. the female that I have gave birth a day after I put her a plastic contraption that seems to have it out for me. (breeder box). Well, the evil thing did it's job and I know have a happy little bunch of 32 babies (not counting the origional 6 babies I got from the pet store) swimming around in my tank. Unfortunatly, I was unable to be there for the birthing... my boyfriend looked at me very strangely when my mom told me and I started doing a happy dance. lol. I moved them all to the one gallon...though I really want to put them in the 3 gallon instead. this one gallon has an internal filter. thinking about splitting them between the 1 gallon and my fish bowl. the six that I had seemed to be thriving in it. now, my other two females look quite a long ways into pregnancy. *in guppy heaven* Amber 2009-02-16 Answer no. 3 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=guppy-babies#4 will ghost shrimp (I believe that that's the OCD one) eat my baby guppies? Amber 2009-02-16 Answer no. 4 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=guppy-babies#5 If they can catch them I would say yes. Add some plants for the fry to hide in mickey 2009-02-22 Answer no. 5 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=guppy-babies#6 one of the possible hybrids (turns out i had two) was grey bodied. Just died for no apparent reason. I moved all of the babies to a ten gallon bare bottom tank with plenty of fake plants to hide in. the other hybrid I have no idea where it is, it likes to hide. out of the 40 something babes, I now have about 15 left. a filter that I was hoping would be ok for them, was at first, but after a week it started sucking them up... Amber 2009-03-12 Answer no. 6 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=guppy-babies#7 do guppy fry normally have pointed tails. I just got a good look at the with a dark net that I have and it looks like all but a few have very narrow, pointed tails. They all look healthy, but is it that the ones without the pointed tails are males? Amber 2009-03-13 Answer no. 7 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=guppy-babies#8 Males should have longer finnage than the females and their anal fin should modify into a tube called a gonopodium, this is used for breeding purposes. You sure there wasn't any endlers in the tank when you bought them? mickey 2009-03-14 Answer no. 8 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=guppy-babies#9 there werent any endlers, only female guppies. It's possible that the tank that they were kept in previously had them. I have three babies that are way lethargic. they were floating at the bottom of the tank, but werent dead. they've been like that for about three days. All three have the pointed tail. I noticed last night, after i put a black folder behind the tank, that only 2 of the healthy babies have a normal, rounded tail. So I was thinking that maybe the pointed fins are females, possibly? Amber 2009-03-14 Answer no. 9 http://forum.aqua-fish.net/?topic=guppy-babies#10 I am hoping for my female to hurry up and burst and for my cousins platy to burst so I will have platies and a few more guppies to my 30 along with the cherry and blackneon I will get from him.
