We have there place for 6 other media than foam and in 3 of them is the ceramic and in other three is carbon. Ceramics destroy the amonia and nitrites and the carbon filters the heavy metals out of the water. But you have to change the carbon in few months, because if it stays there for a longer time, it will start to release the heavy metals back to the water. But with other media I do not have any experiences... There is no need to add carbon unless you want to remove medication from the water it will eventually leach toxins into your tank if not replaced n a regular basis and is often sold by the stores ust to make them money mickey 2009-08-28
