Black Skirt Tetra

I didn’t think that my 7 tetra’s were breeding until I found an 8th swimming round about the size of my pinky fingernail. I couldn’t find much information about how they breed. In my 150 gallon tank is 7 adult black skirt tetras, one baby, one blue gourami, two crayfish, one pleco, one betta, and one failtail goldfish. In my experience tetras breed "somehow", many aquarists don’t know anything about how to breed them. It’s not their fault of course. One friend if mine kept Neon tetras and they bred in 10 litres tank very well. He didn’t notice anything "extraordinary" but few small fishes swimming in the tankSmile. What kind of recommendations are you looking for? Do you want them to breed again? If so, you should buy new aquarium for Black skirts only. Keep 5-6 of them. 4 females, 2 males. 8+ litres per fish (this is because their territories are larger and they "allow" others to breed in this case). And don’t forget to feed them properly. Tubifex helps them to be ready for breeding. Other kinds of live food are well too. Naturally Black skirts breed in community aquariums as well, but it’s more rare and only a few specimens survive. my black skirts breed only when I had 20 of them (it was just a day after I bought 10 tetras). The males and female created small choals, the males chased a female and suddenly eggs dropped from her, but I do not know if they were fertilized. It seems, that they are breeding early in the morning. Zuzana

keeping bettas and gouramis together is not suggested, as the betta and gouramis will become territorial and may kill each other. Also fish with long flowing fins like fantail goldfish arent recommended. Bettas can become stressed in large open waters. goldfish and tropical fish dont usually mix well because of temperate preferences. Terry http://www.fishtankforum.co.uk
