Hi,
A friend of mine has put in a piece of drift wood, she was told that it had been cleaned.
When it was put into the tank it has changed the colour of the water. The fish seem fine but how would she be able to get rid of the colour?

Driftwood will colour the water all the time. There is no way hot to get rid out of colour. Maybe you could find some products which make water more blue/white, but I don’t recommend you to use them.

Hi,
I have a driftwood and it coloured water 6 months. When you change water often they can be in future clear. Try use activated carbon to remove colour. This method has one negative. With carbon you remove all substances.

In my experience I have only used wood taken from lakes or streams, and there has never been any color change.

I have two tanks. In the smaller one I have only one wood, a weak filter and not a strong light. And the water is coloured. In the bigger aquarium I have 3 woods, strong filter and strong light and the water don´t seems to be coloured. By the way, fish from the Amazon river like water coloured by drift wood very much.

Hi, maybe you have such water conditions in your tank. What is your pH, dH and other parameters?

Uf, I really don´t know. I don´t mesure it. But where the water is not coloured, there should be pH a bit more tnan 7. But in the other aquarium too, because in both aquarium we have fish which like bit alkaline water and in both aquarium they are fine. And the dH we control whit shells - they release minerals. So in the both aquarium we should have the same conditions.

Thanks People,
it’s great to be able to get some great help in one place. have passed on info to my friend. but i like the look of th wood in the tank, i think it gives a bit of character. Is there other things besides wood and plants that fish can get a lot out of??
i have a tropical tank with fish like, neons, clown shark, sucker fish (think thats what u call em) i had 3 angel fish but they all died. I want to add more but we are moving house in a month and i would rather add fish after the tank has settled.
While im on that topic has any one got any good tips for moving tanks

I would recomend shells too. Even if you have freshwater aquarium, you can put into it saltwater shells, which have more minerals. We had some problems with freshwater snails - their shells were ugly. Then we put some shells into the tank and their shells were normal again. Maybe bones of the fish started to be stronger too.
