I will be running 2 external filters ,2 300 watt heaters ,2x54 watt lighting(10,000K-whites),2x54 watt actinics.
All the water will be HMA
trying to avoid running a CO2 unit as I am not a great fan of them.

one step further, all the gravel has now been added, think I have the bogwood where I want it but no doubt things will change before I am happy with it.
Plants should be arriving tomorrow so hopefully it will look more the part.
have added 5 cories,6 harlequin rasboras for now.Giving it a month for the plants to settle down (when they eventually arrive), then the cardinal tetras are going in.

hey nice tank, Im in the process of setting up a disucs tank as well.
Im not as far as you are thou..been fish keeping for yrs and yrs..
I like your set-up..
what plants you planting?..im just sticking to Amazon Swords and a bit of hair grass, trying to keep the lighting down for the Discus as they dont like alot of light.. swords are easy to grow..and its the long leaved plants they like...
will be using the fluval 305..(75gal) plus a sub. filter.. 2 heaters as well..etc..sand, driftwood..etc..
oh are you going to be using peat?
again very nice tank..

I used to breed discus, dont want to go down that route again, lot of work.Using HMA water which is running at a PH of 7,fine for tank bred discus. My lighting is bright so to overcome this I intend to add some floating plants, the spraybars on the 2 externals have been turned around to hit the back of the tank.planting swords, vallis, java ferns on the bogwood and I still need to sort out some carpet plants yet.
Gonna leave the tank running for 3 months before I add any discus

good job on the lighting facing it to the back..
what did you have your water hardness at for breeding?...
my sub filter will be facing the back (oppisite corner of fluval) so there is not alot of water movement..in front area of tank..
hard to wait that long eh?..lol..im gonna be longer still..
what kind are the discus?
havent quite decided on mind yet

when I bred the discus every pair had their own water requirements.Had to leave the GH at 4 to prevent a ph crash but one pair would only spawn at a ph of 4, while other pairs would spawn at a ph of 6.5
I love the pigeon bloods, gonna have to wait till the water matures. This is the first time I have used a substrate in a discus setup, normally go bare bottom but wanted to have a go.

Aww yes Pigeon bloods, very cool.
Red tiger, green leopard, royal blue cross and i cant forget the Alenquer discus.. i love the blues the diamond and blue white discus..right now im inquiring about my shoal.. where to buy and which breed.
i work in a pet store, my supplier for the fish department is helping me out..and at a great cost price..any where else i will have to put my money where my mouth is.. but who knows.. but the breed of discus is limited.. Blue Dia, red malarboro, manacpuru blue, golds and pigeons blood red..
I love the brown dark discus the best..
Oh i cant wait..

my favs are royal blue, royal blue cross, red tiger, green leopard and not forgetting.. the wonderful alenquer discus..
goldies and the white butterfly discus too.. awe!! heck all of them.. ...
the pet store I work at, I order my fish through for the store can get me great cost deals on discus, just not sure I want to go that route for this breed of fish..
wanting any of the named above I will have to put my money where my mouth is.. so to speak.. .. but well worth it in the end..
yeah! GH of 4,, risky but worked well..glad to hear that.. maybe someday I will give it a try..
cant wait tot see more photos..
and chatting with you..

Filled the tank up ,holds 96 gallons in total,so only lost a few gallons with the substrate and bogwood.
Panda cories have settled in nicely, rummy nose are looking good .
Water is setting down to a PH of 6.8-7.Will test again next week when everything has settled down.
On the lookout now for a shoal of cardinals.

Wow! looks great... lots of DW.. Im aiming to get the same substrate like you have..little more real than the gravel/rock.
Its going to look awsome when it matures Mickey..
Where abouts you from Mickey?
Im looking to find out right now just what type of tank I have, i want to replace the blcak trim edging top/bottom, but the measurements are knowhere to be found..
the Glass is very thick, more so than what other tanks I have..
who ever put the trim on had the same problem, because its been cut and silaconed on. Ive taken it all off.
I could go with the other tank I have but I want to use the bigger of the two.

I'm from Newark.Notts-England
I reckon you must have 10mm glass.
Plants are still doing fine, expecting to lose a couple from meltdown but so far so good.I have added some waterlife tropiflora to bring up the trace elements.
Need to get in touch with my mate now who still breeds discus to see what pairs he has on the go.Want to add the discus at the 2" size to grow them on.

The tank looks excellent so far. How long are you going to wait before adding discus? Be sure to post photos once they're in.

I can't add to discus to an immature tank,as I am using HMA water instead of waiting for 6 months ,going to add them after 3 months.everything should have settled down by then.

Then will you be introducing discus from another set of parents to try to form pairs? Is it your goal to breed them or just to raise them?

used to have 8 breeding pairs on the go in the past, lot of hard work doing 4 hours of water changes everyday.Want to add some stock from a different supplier so that if they do pair I can then sell them on as unproven pairs to somene who does want to have a go at breeding.

adding the apple snails proved to be a bad move, the discus thought they were breakfast, don't know if they have had the shrimps as I haven't seen them for a couple of days but they might just be hiding.
Added 4 ottos today as there is some brown algae just starting to show on the back glass, that will be their breakfast

tank is now getting over grown, have stopped using C02 altogether as I dont want to jeapordise the health of the fish. The plants dont need it anyway.
Have cut down to 3 water changes per week , water is being filtered great by the plant roots.

another update, some of the discus are now aproaching the 3" mark, problem I have is that there are 2 alpha fish in the tank but they have their own little territories so keeping out of each others way
out of the original 25 discus there are 24 left. One just couldnt settle so I moved him to build up his strength on a special diet but it just wasnt to be
was worried about the high temps with the apple snails but they have grown massive
