I was wondering if adding a snail to a 10 gallon tank would be a better idea than having a gold algae eater. I currently have a pair of guppies, a pair of black skirt tetras and a gold algae eater, but I think I am running into problems with the eater. I have read in a couple places, not this site, that snails are ok to have, but they reproduce like crazy and are hard to keep under control when they start reproducing. Any feedback would be great! The reproduction depends on the snail. Apple snails are big, but they do not breed much (mostly) and their breeding is easy to controle. Ramshorn Snails are small, but they reproduce very easily and especially if you feed your overfeed your fish and it is very hard to get rid of them. Zuzana

I keep ramshorns in my tank and haven't had a problem with them but as posted don't overfeed your fish. I tend to syphon a few out every month with the water change as well http://www.fishtankforum.co.uk

So what does overfeeding have to do with overpopulation with the snails? I'm not really knowledgable with this stuff, I'm just learning still Is it fairly easy to find a ramshorn snail at a local fish shop?

If you over feed the tank, the fish will leave food on the substrate. If the snails are getting plenty of food they will breed. Ramshorns are easy to get hold of http://www.fishtankforum.co.uk

yes they are great at keeping your tank clean,if there are too many dead ones remove cause it cause bad water and fungus as well convulsions.If you have too many you can feed them to larger fish such as goldfish and koi love them.or you can crush the shell and let the other snails eat them,or just remove them when they climb up to surface. but on their own they will cull them selfs if too many.
