Hi all Bye ,

Do you keep your Bettas in ordinary tanks or those bowls which look like glasses (or vase)? No matter which answer you give, could you explain your reasons, please? I don’t keep Betta fish in bowl, just in planted tank specified as follows:

Fish species
2x Siamese fighting fish; 1 male - Red, 1 female - Blue/Red variation,
35x Neon tetra,
5x Common catfish.

Tank dimensions and specification

120x100x45 cm (540 litres),
200 Watt aquarium bulbs (neons),
2x 200 Watt heater,
2x Atman filter for 300+ litres tanks.

Plants

Anubias species,
Vallisneria species,
Cryptocoryne species,
Java moss.

My Betta fish do pretty well and they also breed in the tank. In comparison to bowls where it is impossible to let them spawn, my bettas produce about 20 newborns each two months. I have another tank for juveniles, so that they’re not fighting and I’m selling them later.

Fish bowls shouldn’t be used in my opinion. Maybe I’m wrong btw, so if you share your experiences I will welcome them!

They can be put in a vase but it isn’t as good as having a betta in a large fish tank, you can watch it thrive in all the fresh water in a tank! It also feels more at home!

Hello Biggrin I realize this is an old post but I'm a new member. ;)

I believe anything smaller than 1.5 gallons is too small for a betta. And it's
definetly too small for any other species as well.

My family has 3 male bettas- Castiel/red, Perseus/blue, and Azriel/green. We did
have 4 but Auggie the turquoise betta was soap poisoned by my 5 year old son Sad
Our bettas range from a few months to 3 years of age and each fish is kept in his
own lighted and filtered tank (from 1.5 gallon to 3 gallon size). They each have one
live plant, plastic plants, a "house", and flat glass marbles instead of gravel. We
keep the tanks in different rooms of the house (kitchen, dining room, living room)
so we can enjoy our fish in the rooms we spend the most time in.

We love watching our bettas swim, flare and play. They actually have 'toys' they
play with. Sticks and straws that float at the surface that they make bubble nests
around. Their all time favorite toy is a beaded plastic ring that floats suspended
mid-tank.
Castiel pushes his around and swims thru it, or pushes it into his plants. Perseus
will push his to the bottom of the tank then lets it float back up and then he'll
push it to the top and watch it sink back down. Azriel just 'sits' on his like a
vertical inner tube, he's never been much for playing.

They always 'greet' us when we come in their room- swimming side-to-side and
pushing their toys around. They watch us when we're in the room and always put
on a good show. When we have company over it's not unexpected to find a guest
(Kids and adults alike) bent over one of the tanks watching their antics with
fascination.

Aside from tanks being easier to care for and healthier for my fish, I don't believe
I'd have such happy and interesting fish if I'd stuck them in a bowl.

Only one good place for those bowls, in the refuse bin, in this day and age I can't beleive that people still keep Bettas in such small containers

A betta fish could be held in either. It really somtimes depends on your fish. My betta loves the oxegen pump in a larger tank. Other fish prefer different things. Your fish might not like the current that the oxegen pump creates. Good luck with your fish. Hope this helped Biggrin

I actually found the small desk size 1 -2 gallon aquariums work great for bettas. I've always been a crowntail snob. I feel so bad and want to take them all home when I see them in those disgusting bowls in the stores!

For almost a year, my beta was in my 55 community tank... He and my gourami would chase each other around like dog and cat... The beta never attacked any of my fish, on the contrary, when the beta became ill, the other fish began to attack it and the gourami tried to stay by its side, like it was protecting it... I'm not exaggerating either, they had a very nice relationship and I miss them both very much.

Anyhow, my buddy has a bunch of betas that he keeps in random size bowls (cups almost) and he even designs some... So, as long as you do frequent water changes, I don't think the size would really matter...

Cool
