I have a 20 gal tank. I have cycled it, and currently have 1 baby emerald catfish in it. I bought 2 but 1 of them didn't make it. I have my eye on a few different species. When stocking a new tank should I get one or a pair of fish and let them get used to the tank, or can I get 5 or 6 fish at the same time?

this depends on the fish you are adding. If adding 5-6 fish don't forget their adult size or you will soon realise that your tan is overstocked as they grow

I would add 1-2 fish at a time and then keep testing the water to make sure that it is fine before adding the next 1-2
