one of the most important aspects of keeping your tank healthy and clean is basic maintenace. Some jobs may need to be done on a a daily basis, others may only need doing monthly.Eventually you should workout a timetable for tasks that need performing and when.
Daily jobs:-
do a body count on your fish, look in the tank to make sure they are showing no signs of illness, distress.clean the front glass if required with an algae magnet.check the temperature reading.
Weekly jobs:-
water changes need doing at least 10% is a must at least. If using sand as a substrate lightly disturb the top surface to prevent build up of waste. If using gravel ,run a gravel cleaner over it .
Test your water for amm, nitrite and nitrates,PH
Clean internal filters if reqd
Monthly jobs:_
rinse out all sponges in filters, replace any dirty floss etc.
If live plants are in the tank, trim if getting too large
clean any dirty ornaments
