I have a 4 year old daughter who has her own 5 gallon aquarium. She has an upside down catfish and a opaline gourami. She used to have a pair of golden balloon rams but as the gourami got bigger he got more territorial. The gourami eventually decided to kill the balloon rams. My daughter was sad but once I explained it to her she felt better. Now she says her fish go to heaven when they die. We don't let her feed the fish by herself yet because we fear she will over feed them. So each night before she goes to bed she reminds us that it's time to feed the fish. I think having a small fish tank allows children to show that they can be responsible. It's also a very educational experience. When we walk through the pet store my daughter will point out and name all the fish she knows and she'll tell me if they're aggressive or not. If she hasn't seen a certain fish before she'll ask questions about it. We're really quite proud of the aquarist she is turning out to be.

I agree entirely,I involved my children at an early age,now they have all grown up to own their own reef tanks which are kept spotless.
If they weren't I would make sure they put them right Wink
