I started a new 55 gallon tank with a bunch of guppies that a friend kept asking me to take. I know they are good for conditioning a tank. There are about 12 guppies in the tank and I plan to expand my 10 gallon into this larger tank. In the smaller tank I have a rubber-nose pleco and two cories. I would like to buy one more small pleco and two more cories at some point but my questions are:

1. I have no idea how long these guppies have been breeding before I got them, so I want to add new genes into the gene pool. How many should I get if I want to add other breeds of fish?

2. I would like to also add some mollies, tetras and/or scissortails
how many of the other species can I get before I over populate my tank
