The last time I had my 55gal set up I had 2 Emperor HOB filters.

The 55 gal is empty and I have found myself with a brand new Rena Filstar xP4 (friend's divorce). Canister filters are new to me. The xP4 can handle up to 265 gallons with a flow rate of 400 GPH. Can one overkill with filtration?

My gut would say no, but the box isn't open so if downgrading to the xP3 would be more appropriate I'd rather do that.

I was thinking of setting up some plants and some smaller schooling fish, a silver dollar, and a pleco. Not set on anything yet.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I don't beleive it is possible to overfilter as the bacterial colonies will only grow as large as the food supply that is available. You would probably have to slow down the turnover rate of the filter though
