A friend handed down an old tank and two Fluval canister filters..particaular model has four foam inserts that go in the side and then stack trays for the other media...I was wondering what would be the best media to use in the stack... IT suggests using Biomax in the top but the other three it gives so many options : carbon, ammonia remover,pre-filter,zerocarb,peat,polywool...I have no idea this is my first time with all of this..please help!

We have fluval canister filter too and we have there ceramic rings and carbon. We have there place for 6 other media than foam and in 3 of them is the ceramic and in other three is carbon. Ceramics destroy the amonia and nitrites and the carbon filters the heavy metals out of the water. But you have to change the carbon in few months, because if it stays there for a longer time, it will start to release the heavy metals back to the water.
But with other media I do not have any experiences...

In the fluval filters run ceramic rings at the bottom trays, but underneath the rings place a sponge so that debris doesn't clog them up. There is no need to add carbon unless you want to remove medication from the water it will eventually leach toxins into your tank if not replaced n a regular basis and is often sold by the stores ust to make them money
